    Description

Unusual bamboo transverse flute with shakuhachi tuning—velvet cover included
Excellent condition—same as when first purchased.
There are 4 finger holes on the top side and 1 thumb hole on the bottom, as for a shakuhachi, but the mouth hole is situated for transverse play. The flute is sized for a rich, mellow tone— 21 1/2 inches long x 1 3/16 inch diameter—I don't know the "key". The holes appear to have been burned in, in the traditional way (traditional at least for the bansuri). The body of the flute is also "flame decorated" (mottled surface darkening). The "plug", beside the mouth hole, is the natural bamboo node, not an inserted plug. There are no cracks, splits, checks, etc. in the bamboo except for one tiny check at the plug end—because it lies right at the natural node, it is unlikely to progress further or affect the sound. The surface finish is free of scratches, scuffs, or other disfigurements.
I bought this flute from a small instrument maker before I knew what type of bamboo flute I really wanted to play. After playing it briefly, I decided that the bansuri is more to my liking.
